A Simple Way To Help Stop Metabolic Syndrome In Its Tracks

It is estimated that between a fifth and a quarter of adults in Europe and America have metabolic syndrome and consequently have increased risks of developing both cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

Metabolic syndrome is the medical term for a combination of symptoms, including a fasting glucose level that would indicate possible insulin resistance, high blood pressure and obesity. It puts you at greater risk of heart disease, stroke and other conditions affecting blood vessels.

Terrible three

Suffice to say, on their own these symptoms could potentially damage your blood vessels, but having all three together is particularly dangerous.

Worrying statistics show that more and more children and adolescents are struggling with metabolic syndrome — setting them up for a lifetime of ill health. Fortunately, there could be a simple solution to help curb the development of this cluster of symptoms… and it doesn’t involve a trip to the pharmacy with a prescription in your hands. that doesn’t involve a trip to the pharmacy –

The results of a long-term study, which involved children in the UK, USA, Australia and Finland, showed a clear link between childhood muscular fitness and adult metabolic syndrome that was independent of cardiorespiratory fitness (i.e. how well the heart and lungs supply oxygen to the muscles during exercise).

For the study, the researchers first assessed the children’s muscular fitness when they were aged 9 to 15. Measurements of muscular fitness included strength (hand grip, leg and shoulder extension and flexion), endurance (number of push-ups in 30 seconds), and power (distance of a standing long jump).

The participating children were reassessed 20 years later, as young adults, using the same tests. Measurements were also taken of their indicators of metabolic syndrome – waist circumference, blood pressure, and HDL cholesterol, triglyceride, and blood glucose levels.

Children with the highest muscular fitness scores had a massive 80 per cent lower risk of developing metabolic syndrome as adults, compared to those who had low muscular fitness. Waist circumference (fat around the waist) also played an important factor, with a high measurement during childhood making the risk of developing metabolic syndrome much higher.

Clearly, starting early in life with a healthy and active lifestyle is key to combatting metabolic syndrome. But what if you are an adult? Does it mean that you can’t turn your health around?

Of course not.
