4 Simple Steps To Protect Against Atrial Fibrillation
Atrial fibrillation (Afib) is usually characterised by a rapid, irregular heartbeat. While you may think that this is a condition that is almost impossible to regulate, the good news is that there are plenty of risk factors for Afib that are well within your control.
Toolkit against Afib
- Curb the big three: Obesity, heart disease and high blood pressure have all been linked to an increased risk of atrial fibrillation. Fortunately you can control all three of these health problems by maintaining a healthy diet, like the protein-rich Paleo diet, avoiding all forms of sugar (and artificial sweeteners) and by getting regular exercise.
- Review your prescriptions: Certain prescription drugs including asthma drugs, diuretics for high blood pressure and antidepressants have been linked to atrial fibrillation. Always check the warning labels on any medications you may be taking, and discuss the risks and side effects with your doctor. And where possible seek natural safe alternatives.
- Natural and alternative breakthroughs: Load up on vitamin C. Studies have shown that this heart-healthy vitamin can dramatically reduce atrial fibrillation episodes among people who already have the condition, and it may play an important role in preventing atrial fibrillation. Other vitamins and supplements that have been proven to help strengthen and protect your heart health are the powerful antioxidant resveratrol, vitamin D, Coenzyme Q10 and olive leaf extract. As always, speak with your doctor or alternative health specialist before adding any new supplement to your regimen.
- Breathe and stretch: A few years back, researchers at a major international heart conference found that a few hours of yoga a week cuts Afib episodes by up to 50 per cent. Plus, because yoga has been proven to reduce blood pressure and lower stress levels, it has the potential to be a vital tool in keeping high-risk individuals free from atrial fibrillation.
