Lose Weight Fast With Cumin
The aromatic spice Cuminum Cyminum, better known as cumin, is a staple in Indian, Mexican and North African cuisine. Apart from adding a nutty, peppery taste to food, this native Egyptian spice has now been found to be a powerful aid for weight watchers and anyone who wants to burn off a few extra pounds fast.
Double the fat loss
In a recent study, published in the journal of Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice, researchers tested the effects of cumin on overweight women.
For the study, the researchers randomly divided 88 overweight or obese women into two groups. Both groups followed a reduced calorie diet and received nutritional counselling. One group ate yoghurt mixed with three grams of cumin, twice a day, while the other group ate plain yoghurt.
After three months, the women who consumed cumin lost an average of 50 per cent more weight than the women eating plain yoghurt. They also decreased their body fat by 14.4 per cent ? almost three times more than the control group!
In addition, the cumin group lowered their body mass index and waist circumference significantly more than the control group; reduced their triglycerides levels by 23 points (compared to only five points in the control group); and their LDL “bad cholesterol levels dropped an average of ten points (compared to the control group who saw an average drop of less than one point).
Researchers think that cumin’s weight loss benefits may stem from the heat it generates, which could temporarily increase metabolism. The cholesterol-lowering effect of cumin can be partially attributed to compounds called glycoside saponins, which prevent the absorption of cholesterol and increase its excretion.
However, these health benefits only add to the already long list of rewards you can reap from consuming cumin, including providing relief from digestion problems and stomach aches, fighting insomnia, respiratory disorders, anaemia and even skin disorders.
Cumin is naturally rich in iron, and contains Vitamin C, which promotes a healthy immune system and keeps infections from forming or becoming worse.
Cumin can be used as seeds or ground. For the best flavour, buy the whole seeds and grind them into a powder at home. You can incorporate cumin into your diet by adding it to soups, stews, rice, beans or lentils. It’s a great spice for sweet potatoes, carrots, and cauliflower, and can also be used in marinades, salad dressings and to spice up homemade meatballs or hamburgers.
