By now you probably already know that your gut is home to billions of bacteria. When this delicate balance of bacteria is disturbed, then you can soon start to struggle with a Candida albicans overgrowth — also referred to as a yeast infection.
Candida albicans can wreak havoc on your gut health, leaving you feeling bloated, having painful diarrhoea and in some cases it can even affect your weight and skin.
Candida is notoriously tough to get rid of — because this yeast overgrowth can form “biofilms” that cause cells to cluster so close together that they act as a shield to resist conventional antifungal therapies.
Fortunately, according to a new study, you can beat your candida and yeast infections with reishi mushrooms.
Reishi mushrooms have been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for hundreds of years to help patients boost their immune systems and fight off infection… and they have even been used in modern medicine to help fight prostate cancer.
For this latest study, researchers analysed the components of the reishi mushroom and drew out its extracts, which they applied to two different types of yeast cells — Candida albicans and Candida glabrat.
These two types of yeast cells typically live in your gut and if their populations become too abundant they can make you sick.
The researchers found that reishi extracts penetrated the biofilms created by both Candida albicans and Candida glabrat and were able to kill the yeast cells!
The study also found that reishi mushrooms contain a high level of ascorbic acid or vitamin C. Given that vitamin C is known to inhibit the growth of yeast it could be part of the reason why reishi mushrooms help fight off these fungal overgrowths so easily.
So, if you’re suffering with chronic diarrhoea brought on by antibiotics… or vaginal yeast infections… or thrush of any kind, try adding reishi mushrooms to your daily regimen.
You can add fresh reishi to soups and stews if you can find it at a local Asian market, but some people don’t like the bitter taste.
Instead, you can brew dried reishi into a healing tea… or take it as a supplement. Remember, yeast thrives on sugar. So, cutting all refined carbohydrates, sugars (including fruits), and alcoholic beverages will help starve a yeast overgrowth.
